Hispanics and Latinos are underrepresented in U.S. television, radio, and film. This is combatted by organizations such as the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors , founded in 1975; and National Hispanic Media Coalition , founded in 1986. Together with numerous Latino civil rights organizations, the NHMC led a “brownout” of the national television networks in 1999, after discovering that there were no Latinos on any of their new prime time series that year.
This resulted in the signing of historic diversity agreements with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC that have since increased the hiring of Hispanic and Latino talent and other staff in all of the networks. In 1989, Univision established the Lo Nuestro Awards which became the first award ceremony to recognize the most talented performers of Spanish-language music and was considered to be the “Hispanic Grammys”.
The word Latino is short for LatinoAmericano, which translates to Latin American. It was originally adopted in the US for the purpose of additional categorization of the population in the United States Census.

Beginning with the Watershed amendment of 1965, the United States shifted their policy to encourage the migration of whole families by issuing less visas to unskilled single men and more visas to families. This marked the beginning of a large increase in Latina migration. While men typically migrate at a young age concentration of 18-25, females migrate at generally consistent rates at all age groups.

The Spanish dialects spoken in the United States differ depending on the country of origin of the person or the person’s family heritage.

Many Latino families migrate to find better economic opportunities in order to send remittances back home.
The show was the highest rated and most-watched Spanish-language show in American television history. The show had about 37 million viewers, more than the number of viewers of that night’s episode of American Idol. The show had the highest ratings in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and New York City. This was the only issue to have been sold out in stores across the United States. As the fastest growing minority group in America, Latinas are becoming primary influencers in education, economics and culture in American society and the consumer marketplace.
